LUPITA, COMMERCIAL ROAD, EAST LONDON
ROSA, CARNABY ST, LONDON
CHEESEBURGER, CRINKLE CUT FRIES & CHOCOLATE MILKSHAKE @ DIRTYBURGER, WHITECHAPEL, EAST LONDON
If this was the last thing I ever tasted I'd die happily. Everything from the food to the service was perfect, the only thing I'm annoyed about is the fact that it has opened on my doorstep...thank you dirtyburger, now I will end up looking like a burger because of you!
The prices are reasonable and the burgers are hella dirty...what more could you want. There are three burger variations to choose from on the lunch menu...my fave so far has been the classic cheese burger. You must must must try their hot sauce, they even sell it at the restaurant for 3 pounds a pop.
Their menu isn't just limited to lunch and dinner...they also have a breakfast menu with a variety of lighter burgers to choose from.
Ch-ch-check it out.

CRAYFISH + COUS COUS SALAD & NON ALCOHOLIC MANGO MOJITO @ THE CAFE OPPOSITE ALDGATE EAST STATION (next to nail bar)
Ok so I really don't know what the name of this cafe is, all I know is that it's opposite Aldgate East tube station and next to the nail bar. I also know that it has a really good selection of light, healthy snacks, lunches and juices. The Singaporean ladies who own it also work there and they're sooo lovely! The cafe itself is small so don't expect anything too grand but it's a great place to go for a quick pit stop during the day. The prices are reasonable and everything is made fresh right in front of you.
If you're looking for a good juice or smoothie to try then go for the mango mojito...I have it every time and it hasn't disappointed me yet.
p.s they don't have a toilet cause the space is so small but luckily Whitechapel Gallery across the road has one you can use for free.
KIMCHI BBQ PORK BAGUETTE @ KEU BANH MI, OLD STREET, EAST LONDON
For those who don't know, Banh Mi is a Vietnamese term for bread or more specifically baguette. Keu Banh Mi is a lovely little cafe/restaurant in Old Street which has created some wonderful varieties of the traditional baguette & filling. I tried the kimchi bbq pork which was probably the one that looked best on the menu (to me at least). It was everything I hoped it to be and more!
If you're sick of the standard sandwich fillings then Keu Banh Mi is definitely a good way to go! It's reinvented the baguette and thanks to them every other sandwich seems totally inferior now.
COCONUT MILK WITH STRAWBERRY JELLY BALLS @ MILK TEA & PEARL, BOXPARK, SHOREDITCH, EAST LONDON
I'm obsessed with bubble tea. Lately, it's all I ever talk about.
I was never a huge fan of bubble tea before I tried it at Milk Tea & Pearl...I used to find the pieces at the bottom a bit weird taste and texture wise and never really understood why they'd create something like that in the first place.
Milk Tea & Pearl have taken the drink to new heights though. Their flavour selection is great although not everything tastes that good. I first tried the coconut milk which was delish (but you MUST get it with the tapioca balls...if you don't I can almost guarantee it won't taste that good. Or you'll be spitting out the jelly balls like I did. Not a good look!). I then tried one of the milk green tea flavours which was horrendous (watery and not good at all). The final one I tried which is now my favourite...is honeydew!!! AMAZING.
COCKTAILS @ LOUNGELOVER, SHOREDITCH, EAST LONDON
Lounge-lover on a Tuesday isn't the best unless you like a fairly empty bar with not much atmosphere. The waitress there told me it's super packed on a Friday or Saturday so I can imagine it's a lot better then.
That being said, the cocktail selection is vast (and also incredibly yummy) and the interior is pretty swanky too. Lounge-lover reminds me of Beach Blanket Babylon (I think they're both under the same owner) but a little less pretentious. The cocktail menu is also incredibly similar and the prices are about the same.
The interior is quirky, with crazy chandeliers and different chair/sofa sets. It's perfect for a a round of drinks before heading out! More than two and you'll be bankrupt.
MISO SOUP, SPICY TUNA MAKI, WHITE PEACH & POMEGRANATE ICED I-TEA & TY NANT WATER @ ITSU, FARRINGDON, EAST LONDON
Itsu is a great place for a healthy, quick bite to eat. It's not the cheapest of joints but I don't find it to be overly expensive either (apart from 3.30 for the miso soup which I could probably make myself for 99p).
The sushi there is pretty damn good. It's healthy, fresh and reasonably priced for the amount that you get per box. I still wouldn't choose Itsu sushi over Abokado though. If you want fast sushi, good value for money then Abokado is definitely the place to go.

CUSTARD CRODOUGH @ RINKOFF BAKERY, WHITECHAPEL, EAST LONDON
We were lucky enough to stumble upon this little goldmine on the way to the East London Thrift Store! It's a short walk from Whitechapel High Street and trust me it's worth the few steps.
It's hidden down a little archway and the shop itself isn't too large at all but boy oh boy does it sell really good stuff! Everything looks great and I'm sure tastes pretty good too. It's all freshly made and smells incredible.
I tried tuna and sweetcorn in a poppyseed roll which was simple but fresh tasting and quite yummy. I really wanted a bagel but they were all out by the time we got there...so morning really is best.
I also tried to fill the bagel shaped void in my stomach with a custard crodough which turned out to be one of the best decisions I've ever made. They're both round with a hole in the middle..same same but different. Anyway the crodough was simply divine and definitely the reason I'll be heading back there this coming weekend. They had a great selection of flavors from raspberry to toffee & apple. If you've ever tried a Marks & Spencer's Yum Yum and enjoyed it then you will definitely not be disappointed when you try the Rinkoff Crodough.

SIRLOIN STEAK WITH BERNAISE SAUCE AND CHIPS & PRALINE CREPE & ICED BERRIES WITH WHITE CHOCOLATE SAUCE @ COTE, CLIFTON VILLAGE, BRISTOL, UK
Praline crepe: Chocolate & praline crepe with caramelized bananas and creme chantilly. Don't let the fact that their house dessert is something different put you off from getting the praline crepe. My grandfather ordered the house dessert and let me tell you it wasn't nearly half as yummy as the crepe.
Steak & Chips: The steak and chips is a fairly simple combo but always manages to make me incredibly happy. I had my steak medium rare with a side of salad, fries and bernaise sauce. There were many other incredible sounding things on the menu but as I wasn't feeling too well at the time I just wanted something easy and filling. This certainly was that and more!
Iced berries & white chocolate sauce: This wasn't my order but I saw my grandmother indulging and managed to snap a picture before there was nothing left. She said it was really great...I didn't get a bite but I trust her judgement.

SEA BREAM CARPACCIO, CASSIS VINAIGRETTE, ROCKET CRESS & CHEESE PLATTER &
DEEP FRIED, PAPRIKA MARINATED CALAMARI @ TERRACE RESTAURANT, NATIONAL THEATRE, LONDON
The Terrace Restaurant at the National Theatre to me was somewhat disappointing. I feel like they could've done a better job in terms of the portion sizes and interior design. After studying advertising and looking closely at design for the past two years I've come to be quite critical of restaurant interiors. Not that I'm some sort of authority on the subject or anything! But I definitely feel they could've made it look and feel a lot better.
Anyway the food tasted really good but wasn't anything amazing. The portion sizes were also terribly small and for the price of each, not so good at all. The cheese platter was great in terms of selection and that was possibly the best dish out of them all.

GO BANANA'S WAFFLE WITH BANOFFEE ICE CREAM & HONEY AND CINNAMON WAFFLE WITH VANILLA ICE CREAM AND WHIPPED CREAM @ THE URBAN CHOCOLATIER, ALDGATE EAST/WHITECHAPEL, EAST LONDON
Down a little lane between Aldgate East & Whitechapel is a hidden gem called The Urban Chocolatier. It's only been open for a couple of months which is probably why not many people I've spoken to have heard of it. In fact we randomly stumbled across it one rainy day. It's a great place to go for a night cap or munchie fest as it's open till midnight. The place itself is quite spacious with plenty of seating (booths and tables). It's tastefully decorated with paint splattered walls and a purple theme running throughout. Plus they have a flat screen TV which plays really sick time lapses. They even have LED box stools which make the place look pretty swanky.
The choice of waffles, hot chocolate, mocktails, ice cream, chocolate etc etc is wonderful! They literally have any flavour hot chocolate you could possibly think of. So far I've tried the White Hazelnut and I went back a second time to try the Coconut one. I thought the coconut was really lovely and the white hazelnut was good too but a bit too sweet for my liking. Next on the list is blueberry which will be interesting i'm sure.
The Go Banana's waffle (which is what I ordered) with banoffee ice cream was super yummy...the ice cream being the best part! They even have red bull flavored ice cream if that tickles your fancy. I'll be trying that sometime soon so wait for the review.
The service is a little slow but I'll make allowance as it's still a baby in terms of age!

THE DUCK CONFIT BRIOCHE @ CAMDEN LOCK FOOD MARKET, CAMDEN, LONDON
This was beautifully done! Crispy duck skin scratchings with homemade red onion chutney, rocket, mustard and a choice of melted cheese enveloped in sweet, soft brioche...magnifique!
A sandwich is 6 pounds and although you might think that's a little too much it really is totally filling and incredibly tasty...just don't share with anyone else!

PONDICHERRY VANILLA NITRO ICE CREAM @ CHIN CHIN LABS, CAMDEN LOCK, CAMDEN, LONDON
What's the fuss about nitro ice cream? Well...
Where a normal ice cream parlor would have a freezer, instead there is 180 litre tank of nitrogen, complete with a pressure gauge. It looks and feels like a wee science lab, with the guys behind the counter wearing protective gloves and goggles. It's a great gimmick!
But I must report that the ice cream does in fact taste somewhat better than the normal stuff. It's a lot smoother and has hardly any icy pieces at all. The idea is to make it your own by choosing different toppings and sauces.
The pondicherry vanilla was lovely but I wasn't too big a fan of the chocolate sauce. I think I would've preferred the raspberry come to think of it.
Try it for yourself and see.

MINI CREPES WITH NUTELLA & WHIPPED CREAM @ CAMDEN LOCK MARKET, LONDON
Mini crepes dusted in icing sugar with whipped cream and nutella...who can say no?! I have to say, these little buggers were pretty deadly and I'm glad I wasn't in charge of finishing the whole plate.
I like the idea of bite-size crepes and if I was going to order them myself, I'd probably go for the strawberries and nutella.
I recall the plate being under 5 pounds which I supposed isn't too bad considering you get about 8-10 mini crepes.

COOKIES & FUDGE @ CAMDEN LOCK MARKET, LONDON
I feel that in my previous life I could've been the cookie monster. I feel constantly drawn to anything slightly crumbly, chocolatey and cookie like. It's a serious problem.
If you're a cookie fiend too then head down to the Camden Lock food market and try the peanut butter cookie!! It's to die for.

PRESSED BEETROOT & APPLE JUICE @ APOSTROPHE, HOLBORN, LONDON
Apostrophe is not a cafe I venture into often. In fact I only stumbled in there due to T Wetts needing the toilet. And you obviously cannot use their toilet without buying a little something in return. So we went for a couple of pressed juices.
I tried the beet & apple which was super yummy and refreshing. It tasted too sweet for my liking but It would've been a good mix without the excess sugar.
TW tried a lemon lime one which was way too bitter for both of us!
Don't think I'll be heading in there again anytime soon. Especially not for the food or drink. Maybe for the toilet.

NASI LEMAK & ICE MILO DINOSAUR @ RASA SAYANG, CHINA TOWN, LEICESTER SQUARE, LONDON
Nasi Lemak is a fragrant rice dish cooked in coconut milk and 'pandan' leaf which is most commonly found in Malaysia, where it is considered the national dish. I've only tried two things on the menu at Rasa Sayang and neither have disappointed me as yet. The Nasi Lemak was spicy, creamy and with the chuntney was just too damn good. The service is quick and friendly and it's not even that expensive.
The ice milo dinosaur tasted exactly like the average ice milo but the dinosaur comes with more milo powder on top. They make it hot and then add ice so make sure to stir fully to get the full effect.

JASMINE PEARL TEA @ TEASMITH, SPITALFIELDS, EAST LONDON
Tucked away on the opposite side of the market halls at Spitalfields is a small boutique tea shop called Teasmith. Although in a prime location in East London it's not really that easy to spot and you could easily walk past it a few times without knowing it's even there.
It seems to be owned by a Scottish tea fanatic...a seemingly cool guy who comes off rather intimidating at first. He definitely knows his shit when it comes to tea..especially the Japanese collections.
The tea is somewhat expensive but worth it as he'll top it up 2-3 times depending on how much a small quantity of the plant will provide.
It's silence makes it a wonderful place for mulling over a cuppa. It's also offers tea rituals and tasting. Their cookies look real good too.

FRESH JUICE (NEW RANGE) & YAKI UDON @ WAGAMAMA'S, SPITALFIELDS, EAST LONDON
I always get my order wrong when I go to Wagamama's! I somehow forget and end up choosing Yaki Soba instead of Yaki Udon. What may seem like a minor difference is actually major in terms of taste. It just depends on whether you like thin or thick noodles. I prefer the ones pictured above. Thick and way more flavorsome in my opinion.
Their new range of juices are pretty good too. They know how to market their stuff because as soon as you're seated they give you a mini taster of one of their juices...you don't get to choose but you'll probably end up choosing the one they gave you as they all taste so good. They don't add any extra sugar which I rate and they always pick great blends. Another one of my favorites at Wagamama's is the Raw Juice.

GUAVA COLLINS JUICE, SOM TAM PAPAYA SALAD, THAI CUTTLEFISH & CHAR GRILLED SALMON @ BUSABA EATHAI, WESTFIELD, STRATFORD, EAST LONDON
Guava Collins: Guava, Lime, Coconut, Thai Lime Leaf
The juice did a round of the table and everyone agreed it was one of the best they'd tasted. It was chilled, refreshing and really really yummy. I didn't realize guava juice could be so good! I'm pretty sure the addition of coconut had something to do with it.
Som Tam Salad: I have an obsession with the taste of thai papaya or mango salad! Busaba's is the best I've ever tasted. The salad dressing is insanely good...bitter, sweet and spicy. I always order it and it's never disappointed me.
Thai Cuttlefish: Another of their staple dishes...you can never ever go wrong with their cuttlefish. It's always cooked to perfection and has a chewy texture that I love.
Char Grilled Salmon: It wasn't my main but I tried a piece and I have to say it wasn't all that flavorsome but I can imagine with a little gravy or papaya salad in the mix it'll do the trick.

REDCHURCH FLAT WHITE @ ALLPRESS ESPRESSO, SHOREDITCH, EAST LONDON
I came across Allpress Espresso one dreary day when I was far too early for work. It's a cute little coffee shop with a few small tables and one large coffee bar. It may not be the best place to crack on with work but it's definitely worth the trip for the coffee.
The only coffee they sell is their Redchurch blend which is bloody incredible. I was never a big fan of coffee but this really does take the cake. I chose a Flat White because it had the most milk! I added a couple of sugars to make it easier to down.
Their selection of cakes and their mint tea looks lovely so will definitely be trying those soon.

APPLE, MINT AND LIME FRESH JUICE & SPICY CHICKEN PHO SOUP AND NOODLES @ PHO, LIVERPOOL STREET (SPITALFIELDS MARKET), LONDON
Okay so apparently it's pronounced as 'fur'...according to the Vietnamese rudeboi sitting opposite me.
Pho is quite literally one of the best Vietnamese joints I've been to! It doesn't look or feel like Vietnam...in fact it feels just like Shoreditch (which seems to be working for them) but the food is super yummy and authentic (or so I think anyway).
The Pho soup is their staple dish and comes in loads of different variations. I went for something a little spicy and meaty for my cold. So good! I couldn't finish it all and trust me there's no point getting a starter because the main is HUGE. You won't realize until you're halfway through.
The juice was fresh, tasty and fully worth the three pound price mark!
Next time I'm trying the desserts...not just one. All.

CITRUS FRUIT, HONEY & GINGER STEEPER @ PURE, MOORGATE, LONDON
On a cold day there's nothing as good as the Pure Steeper! It's made from concentrate and topped off with fresh slices of ginger. It comes boiling hot, which may sound silly to have mentioned, but you wouldn't believe how many hot drinks are served only luke warm.
Pure is a great place to chill! The food and drink is super healthy...especially their juices (probably what they're best known for). The prices are reasonable and and the seating downstairs is super comfy! I'm definitely going to head back there more.

HALF CHICKEN, CHIPS & A MIXED GREEN SALAD @ NANDO'S, WHITECHAPEL, EAST LONDON
Sometimes I dream of Nandos. The half chicken drenched in peri peri sauce. The crispy fries. The fresh salad or coleslaw. Mmm. I have no self control.
Seriously though...it's one of the best meals you could buy yourself. It works out to around 10 pounds and usually you'll find nothing left on your plate...so that's a good sign right?!
They have so many other wonderful things on the menu but nothing does me better than a half chicken and chips. It's calling my name now.

HOT BOOZE & BBQ @ QUEEN OF HOXTON ROOFTOP, SHOREDITCH, EAST LONDON
Queen of Hoxton is without a doubt one of the most talked about bars in East London. It is incredibly hipster (which can sometimes be a turn off), so if you can get past the cool kids in their top buttoned shirts and skinny jeans (sorry no stereotyping here) then I have no doubt you'll fall in love with it too.
The place itself is full of cool shit including a ping pong table, an oldschool photo booth, art/installations, and during the winter months they erect a wig wam on the rooftop which offers up a bbq, a bonfire to roast marshmallows (which you can buy there) and a bar which serves the best hot booze i've ever tasted.
Each day the bbq menu changes...I tried the burger with a side of potatoes and red cabbage. It was decent but nothing amazing! The cabbage was actually the best part...really yummy! Out of the hot drinks I managed to try the hot gin punch and hot buttered rum before I felt sick from all the sugar. The hot buttered rum was amazing but too sweet to have more than one. The hot gin punch was incredible! Go try it!
Be prepared to be broke afterwards though as a drink is six pounds and the food was around the same too!
CHILLI BURGER & BROOKLYN LAGER @ BYRON, SPITALFIELDS, EAST LONDON
I had heard loads of good stuff about Byron before I actually had the time to go there and try it for myself. Everything from the menu design to the food was damn good!
I tried the Chilli burger:
Green chilli, American cheese, shredded iceberg and chipotle mayonnaise
To go with it I ordered a side of coleslaw and of course a beer!
The beer choice was pretty mad and I had to ask the waitress what she recommended. She said the Brooklyn Lager was by far the best and most loved at Byron and that if I didn't agree I could swap it for something else. She was definitely telling the truth though! The beer was even better than the burger.
The whole meal cost me around 20 pounds, but to be honest I could've done without the coleslaw as the burger and beer was filling enough. It's not a cheap place to eat but boy oh boy was it good.
P.s sorry about the photo quality...I was too eager to eat & It was too good not to put up a post about it

NASI GORENG & ICE MILO @ RASA SAYANG, CHINA TOWN, LEICESTER SQUARE, LONDON
I was introduced to this joint earlier last year and everytime I've been back I've ordered the same thing...and when I'm not eating there, I'm usually dreaming of eating there.
Rasa Sayang isn't a fancy place at all but it's perfect for a really good, fast, cheap meal. The whole meal cost me around eleven pounds and completely satisfied my cravings!
A couple of my friends said the rice was a bit too salty for their liking as it's drenched in soy sauce but personally, I love that! It can be pretty spicy for someone who isn't accustomed to eating much chilli...so have the water on standby.

CHICKEN TAOUK WRAP WITH HUMMUS & SALAD @ COMPTOIR LIBANAIS, WESTFIELD STRATFORD, LONDON
I really cannot get enough of this! It's not the best Taouk i've had (the best one i've had is from a little joint in Bristol called Cedar's Express) but it definitely comes close.
You can buy the wrap alone for around five pounds but if you're looking for that extra bite then the meal deal is only two pounds extra. The salad looks good but truly wasn't that great at all so maybe the wrap on it's own will do just fine.
Inside the wrap:
Sliced marinated grilled chicken
Pickled cucumber
Tomato
Garlic Sauce
P.s Try the Toufaha Juice (Apple, Mint & Ginger) it's so tasty and refreshing!

HOT HONEY, LEMON AND GINGER @ SUNDAY (UP) MARKET, BRICK LANE, LONDON
One of the great things that comes out of Winter in London is the mulled wine. The prospect of mulled wine and hot spiced apple cider brings light to a rather gloomy season.
I tried the hot fresh honey, lemon and ginger which was INCREDIBLE. I love hot drinks on a cold day and this one really did perk me up. It was tasty, fresh and helped my poor little throat.
At 2.50 a large cup it's fully worth it!

CHICKEN RICE BALL & TEMPURA CONE @ PADDY FIELD CAFE STALL, SUNDAY (UP) MARKET, BRICK LANE, LONDON
Mmm. Tempura.
I paid 3.50 for the two and it was fully worth it. I wasn't expecting it to be that tasty or fresh but I was pleasantly surprised. Once you choose what you want, the lady makes it fresh in front of you within 3 minutes flat.
The chicken ball was delish! They used a soya sauce mixture within it to give it a good kick. The tempura cone was soft and also had a nice salty taste to it.
I'm going back for more next Sunday.

PINA COLADA @ SUNDAY (UP) MARKET, BRICK LANE, LONDON
If you like Pina Colada's and getting caught in the rain then this is most definitely for you.
The Sunday (Up) Market is one of my all time favourite markets. It has everything from kitsch handmade jewellery to authentic cuisines.
I stumbled across a little stall selling pineapples filled with Pina Colada and I just had to get one. A cup of the mixture is 3 pounds, and a carved out pineapple is 4.
Unfortunately for me it was a Virgin Pina Colada but it still tasted super good and the fact that it was in a pineapple made me feel even better. It's a lovely idea for parties and probably wouldn't cost too much to make either.

PECAN PIE, BACON MAPLE ICE CREAM & POPCORN @ CARAVAN, KING'S CROSS, LONDON
I'm still trying to recover from this killer dessert. This was actually my first time trying pecan pie...and after this one...it definitely won't be my last.
The idea of pairing the pie with sticky popcorn and bacon maple ice cream was genius! I've never had bacon ice cream before and to be honest I couldn't really taste the bacon in it anyway.
Caravan has me sold. Next time I wanna try their affogato dessert!

BAKED EGGS, TOMATO PEPPER RAGOUT, GREEK YOGHURT, SOURDOUGH BREAD WITH CHORIZO SAUSAGE @ CARAVAN, KING'S CROSS, LONDON
I had heard so much about Caravan before actually managing to march my lazy butt over there. I guess everyone else has heard about it too because when I got there, there was a waiting time of 45 mins. I've mentioned previously that I hate queuing for food and had the sun not been out to help my mood I probably would've given up. I have to say though...it was worth the wait.
The place itself is simple and effortlessly cool. Perfect for Sunday brunch or a casual lunch or dinner throughout the week!
After much deliberation I decided to go with the baked eggs. I was set on having a main course and a dessert so I knew I had to choose something savory first. The dish was super delicious! I was thoroughly impressed with everything from the taste to the service.

SALTED CARAMEL HOT CHOCOLATE @ CARAVAN, KING'S CROSS, LONDON
I have to say, this didn't really taste too much like salted caramel and it really wasn't that hot when I received it either. I hate when you ask for a hot drink and they serve it to you luke warm.
The hot chocolate tasted exactly like a watered down hot chocolate. Not very impressive and something I wouldn't bother ordering again.

ALBION CAFF GOODIES FROM SHOREDITCH BRANCH, LONDON
After a long week at work I decided to treat myself to some snacks from the Albion.
-Salted Caramel Tart
-Kendal Mint Cake
-Apple
This sounds mad but their apples are THE BEST. They taste so good, way better than any other apple i've ever had. If you don't believe me then go buy one yourself and try..it's 50p.
The salted caramel tart was sweet, crunchy and salty! Their baked goods are incredible...so reasonably priced for the size. I'm looking forward to trying their giant macaroons next weekend.
Kendal mint cake is one of my all time favourites. I first tried it when I was hiking for my silver Duke of Edinburgh award. It's the best for long walks or training as it gives you sooooo much energy! In any case though it's so delicious...mint coated in dark chocolate.

APPLE, CINNAMON & RAISIN FRUSLI BAR, NAKD BERRY DELIGHT CRUNCH, AND A BOOK CALLED FOOD RULES BY MICHAEL POLLAN
In the mornings (especially weekdays), I tend to eat a cereal bar with a piece of fruit. It's probably not enough to fuel the day but it definitely keeps me going for a little while at least. I'm a big fan of Jordan's Frusli bars and the flavour pictured here is my all time favourite. The bar is sweet, sticky and a great bite to eat in the morning.
I wasn't always a fan of nakd bars, especially the original ones. I really do love their new flavours and I feel that they're a lot easier to eat with the crunch. I tend to go for the berry delight which seems to work a treat in the mornings. Plus they're only 75p usually so I don't feel too bad for buying a couple now and again.
Food Rules is a book I found in Whitechapel Art Gallery (go there). In this age of ever more elaborate diets and conflicting health advice, Pollan brings a welcome simplicity to our daily decisions about food. He stresses that eating doesn't have to be so complicated.
The book is clear, concise and welcomes Pollan's trademark wit. The handbook lays out a set of straightforward, memorable rules for eating wisely, one per page accompanied by an explanation. It's an easy to use guide that draws from a variety of traditions, suggesting how different cultures through the ages have arrived at the same enduring wisdom about food. Whether at the supermarket of at an all-you-can-eat buffet, this is the perfect guide for anyone who ever wondered, 'What the hell can I eat?".

BANANA, HONEY & AVOCADO SHAKE WITH A CHICKEN TIKKA PANINI @ DULCE CAFE, WHITECHAPEL HIGH STREET
So in an effort to check out more places in and around Whitechapel I took my trusty foodie friend Cici for a wee walk to get some lunch. We were confronted by a massive queue at the place we originally wanted to eat at, but Dulce cafe was quite close and had no queue so we decided to chill there. I have to be honest, the food wasn't so great! I felt that the panini was pretty standard and didn't stand out in the taste test at all. The salad was dry and had no real flavored dressing. The only thing that made it worthwhile was the banana, honey & avocado shake (what I ordered but am not wholly sure if that's what ended up being given to me) which was soooooo good but not really avocado-y enough for my taste.
Dulce cafe is a good place to go if you find yourself stuck around Aldgate East station. The service is quick and extremely friendly, not that it changes the quality of the food but maybe it's the perfect place for just a coffee or a juice break.

BACON NAAN BREAKFAST @ DISHOOM, SHOREDITCH, LONDON
This week has been incredibly hectic! I've been at work everyday this week for training and I feel like nothing other than practical experience could have taught me better. So far I've handled the door, the queue, been a runner for tables and seating people, and today I was given a crash course in working the hostess screen (showed in the middle photo).
Restaurant life...is it all its cracked up to be?! Well, it's kinda a whole lot more.
It's amazing the thought and organization that goes into running a high volume restaurant. You never really think about shit like that when you're the customer...you're mainly just focused on getting your food and getting out. But if next time you sit and think...'hmm how the hell does a place like this run itself?!', you'd be pretty shocked for sure. So many people contribute to the customer having a great overall dining experience...the hostess who welcomes and seats you, the waiter who takes your orders and serves you food, the managers who make sure everything run according to time, the bar people...the list is endless. What I find most shocking is that almost every night we have a waiting list/queue of two hours...people are dedicated...they know the food is worth the wait. If I was told to wait two hours I'd be feeling pretty down and out, so it's fascinating that so many people are willing to do so regardless.
I've still got a lot more to learn but so far so good!
So as a treat for my 9am start on a Saturday I was offered a yummy breakfast...which of course I ate gladly. Bacon Naan. Incredible. Naan bread, char grilled bacon, coriander & chilli jam. If you're ever in the vicinity for breakfast you really must must check it out. It's pretty much Shoreditch's best kept secret (or worst considering everyone's slowly starting to catch on). Breakfast runs from 9am-12pm on weekends and 8am-11:30am on weekdays. Bon apetit!

ALL AMERICAN PANCAKES & VEGGIE PANCAKES @ THE BREAKFAST CLUB, SPITALFIELDS, LONDON
I've previously posted about my undying love for TBC...and this post says no different. In fact, the food this time around was so bloody good that I've been thinking I should eat pancakes everyday and all day.
I opted for the veggie pancakes as I've been trying not to eat or order to much meat these days. I asked for poached eggs because I love breaking the yolk and letting it seep into the pancake. The potatoes were fried to perfection and tasted incredible with the maple syrup on the pancakes.
I would give the breakfast (complete with a chai latte) a 9/10. I thoroughly enjoyed scoffing down my pancakes and I now truly understand why more than one third of the United States population is obese. Pancakes! Go figure.

SALMON & TUNA MAKI ROLLS WITH EDAMAME (MEAL BOX) @ ABOKADO, FARRINGDON, LONDON
If I could only eat one thing for the rest of my life...it would most definitely be sushi. I discovered Japanese food around 8 or 9 years ago and ever since I've been hooked. I remember one summer when my friend was down from NYC and we literally ate at Yo!Sushi everyday for a week. When I'm back in Sri Lanka, sushi is a lot more affordable and so I go as often as I can. It's been difficult to find a place over here which is affordable and one that makes really tasty and fresh sushi.
Tesco sushi is crap! Pret is pretty expensive and Yo!Sushi is REALLY expensive. Needless to say I felt pretty hard done by in life. That was until I stumbled across Abokado.
Abokado was born out of a love for fast, cheap and healthy food. Whilst in Aussie they would eat fresh sushi rolls, soups and smoothies everyday. When they thought about lunchtime back at home (UK) they realized there was nothing much to look forward too...only cheese & pickle sandwiches. So they started Abokado. What a great idea.
Their sushi meal boxes are such good value for money! They even sell mini hand rolls which I go nuts over. Their smoothies are fresh and incredibly yummy (beetroot & mint). I eat there most days after a workout and I never feel guilty for it. I'm not worried about how many calories I'm consuming or the percentage of saturated fat. I know their food is good for me.

AVOCADO & KIWI SMOOTHIE, GRILLED LIME CHILLI PRAWN & RICE @ BANH MI BAY, FARRINGDON, LONDON
I'm a big fan of smoothies but I'm not always fully sold by avocado ones for some reason. I usually put it down to the texture. However, the one at Banh Mi Bay was pretty much the same in texture but way more flavorsome with the hint of kiwi. The smoothie was icy, crunchy and really really fresh.
Their food is quick, easy and simple which I rate highly. I hate waiting around for food when I'm hungry and I love when I can be totally satisfied by a really simple meal. The prawns were cooked nicely and had a lovely bitter taste to them due to the lime. The sticky rice was so good when dipped in the sriracha sauce (which they sell there, as well as other bits and bobs like coffee, condensed milk etc)
The service is polite and fast and I would recommend this place to anyone who's after an affordable bite of Vietnamese food!

CHOCOLATE DUSTED MERINGUE @ ALBION CAFF, SOUTHWARK, LONDON
Imagine a meringue the size of your face. Well you don't really have to imagine because you can buy one...a really yummy one in fact...from the Albion Caff in Shoreditch or in Southwark.
The meringue is dusted with chocolate powder, so expect to get it all over your face...I learnt the hard way.
Once you break into it, it's super gooey and eggy, exactly how a meringue should be!
It's so big that you're going to need extra plates...share it out, don't be greedy.

WHITE RUSSIAN COCKTAILS @ JAZZ AFTER DARK, SOHO, LONDON
If you're a die-hard Amy Winehouse fan then you'll know that Jazz After Dark is where she first started her career. The little jazz bar acts as a shrine to Amy, with dozens of her portraits lining the walls.
The live music is wonderful and the place is super quirky and cool...but don't expect anything too grand as it really is a tiny bar. Their cocktails were perfection and tasted more like lassi's or milkshakes rather than cocktails (which I appreciate). Also check out their tapas menu, I had the calamari rings which were really yum!
So the pitcher pictured here is the White Russian and is made up of Vodka, Kahlua and Cream. If you're trying to watch your weight then this is most probably the worst thing you could order. If you want something that's gonna get you pretty wasted and also tastes good in the process then the White Russian is #1.

SMOKY SHACK BURGER @ SHAKE SHACK, COVENT GARDEN, LONDON
When my faithful foodie friend suggested the Shake Shack I really had no idea what the big hoo-haa was. Now I do.
You can expect a queue on the weekend but don't let that put you off as it tends to move pretty quickly & in any case the food is totes worth it.
My smoky shack burger was just the right size...not too big and definitely not too small. The patty wasn't too bad either, heavy enough and drenched in melted cheese. Bacon and some smoky peppers lifted the taste by a mile. The bun was pretty much perfect...soft and sweet.
The burger on it's own was around 6 pounds if I remember correctly. It's a wonderful fast food treat that doesn't burn too much of a hole in your pocket.
If you love milkshakes, fries, burgers & custard desserts then this is a MUST.

CONCRETE JUNGLE DESSERT @ SHAKE SHACK, COVENT GARDEN, LONDON
This may look like your worst nightmare but I promise this unsightly goo will make it's way into your top 10 desserts...that is... if you are easily swayed by peanut butter, caramel, banana & frozen custard.
If you think it's going to be runny and overpoweringly custardy...then you're wrong. It's just like eating ice cream...only better.
It may not sound like a combination made in heaven but it sure tastes like one.

TRICOLORE SALAD STARTER @ PREZZO, KINGS CROSS, LONDON
Tomatoes, Buffalo Mozzarella Cheese, Avocado & Rocket
So simple yet so good. Seasoned with black pepper, salt & a olive oil/vinaigrette combo.
Their dishes are good value for money and really quite tasty! The King's Cross branch is more of a quick eat before catching a train sorta place...so probably best to head to their proper HQ in Euston.

PENNE ARRABIATA (LIGHT OPTION) @ PREZZO, KINGS CROSS, LONDON
So the other great thing about Prezzo is that they have a light calorie option...whilst it may not be that much less than the normal meal, it's still a great option for a health conscious person who wants a guilt free conscience.
The penne arrabiata was spicy but really good for blasting out the cold and cough.

BOLLYBELLINI @ DISHOOM, SHOREDITCH, LONDON
What you are about to witness is a strong obsession & love for Dishoom. There were around 4 or 5 separate dishes & drinks that I felt needed a special mention, as well as one or two that in my opinion, didn't quite make the cut.
Bear in mind that some of the photographs may not be that too clear as I was trying real hard not too look like a retard or too instagram happy.
The Bollybellini was by far the prettiest little lady on the menu...
Raspberries
Lychees
Rose
Cardamom
Prosecco
& I'd most definitely have her again.

WHISKEY SOUR ON THE ROCKS @ DISHOOM, SHOREDITCH, LONDON
Onto the next one...
Whiskey
Lemon
Sugar
Egg White
made up this creamy concoction. Topped off with a lemon peel this drink fulfilled my whiskey craving and kept me wanting more. The waitress recommended this as a must try and said it was one of the restaurants best sellers...I now know why.

CHILLI CHEESE TOAST @ DISHOOM, SHOREDITCH, LONDON
Not as good as my mum's (she'd want me to say that)...oh and of course I'm biased!
But in all fairness it did come really really close. The toast wasn't too soggy or too heavy, everything worked well together and it was the perfect starter to get the taste buds going.
Who can say no to cheddar melted on toast with chilli?!

OKRA FRIES @ DISHOOM, SHOREDITCH, LONDON
Say what?! Okra Fries?!
I was incredibly happy to see this on the menu as i've been longing to try okra any way other than in a Sri Lankan curry. This impressed me so much that I think I might try and re-create it at home.
The okra fries were crunchy and seasoned beautifully. RIP french fry.

SKATE CHEEKS KOLIWADA @ DISHOOM, SHOREDITCH, LONDON
Basically, fish bites with an out of this world tamarind and date chutney.
The bites were so soft they became addictive. Paired with the chutney it was like the joy of Christmas morning in my mouth (weird but nevertheless wonderful).
On it's own I don't think I would've enjoyed it so much but with the dip it was pretty sensational.
In my opinion, tamarind makes everything better.

GUNPOWDER POTATOES @ DISHOOM, SHOREDITCH, LONDON
I chose this simply for the name. It sounded sick, it tasted SICK. SIIIIICK.
The potatoes seduced me with their brown skin and smoky grilled taste. Plus they were tossed around in butter and crushed with aromatic seeds and green herbs. I'm a sucker for that.
The raita dip cooled it down a bit and quite honestly this was one of the best potato dishes I've ever tasted.

HOUSE CHAI, BAILEYS CHAI & NAUGHTY CHOCOLATE CHAI @ DISHOOM, SHOREDITCH, LONDON
I have to say that the chai was what I was most excited about from the start of the meal. And if you've read my Chai tea post from the Gallery Cafe on the Sri Lanka tab, you'll know just how much I love it. So needless to say, I was expecting to be wowed!
However, It didn't totally live up to my great expectation. Not so much the house chai as the other two. The Baileys chai was really freakin good at first taste but was way too thick, creamy and sugary to drink more than half. If you've got a sweet tooth then it'll be perfect for you no doubt.
The naughty chocolate chai was made with chocolate and bourbon. I couldn't even drink more than two sips for fear that my liver would drop dead in the process. It was pretty potent but quite honestly I'm a bit shit when it comes to booze anyway.

PISTACHIO KULFI @ DISHOOM, SHOREDITCH, LONDON
Finally...
The kulfi was a great end to the meal. It was sweet, creamy and a lovely treat. I've tried kulfi many a time before but this was the first one where I was like 'Can I have another?!' even though I was suffering from a major foodbaby at the time.
Whatever you do...get this to complete the meal!

SALT BEEF ON RYE BREAD WITH SAUERKRAUT, MUSTARD & GHERKIN & ROOT BEER @ THE BRASS RAIL, SELFRIDGES FOOD HALL, LONDON
Seriously, The Brass Rail is salt beef haven. Their main carver, Saj, has been carving beef with Selfridges for over 33 years...how's that for experience! That's 33 years of TLC going into one beautifully stacked sandwich. You can choose from a variety of different sandwiches and salad options...but if you really wanna taste a bit of history then the salt beef is the only way to go.
I met this one dude in the queue who was ordering the tongue. To my disgust, the carver brought out this super long tongue which he then cleaned up and chopped into pieces (pretty weird). I think the guy realized I was finding it all a bit too much to handle, but he assured me that the tongue was by far the most tasty part of the animal. He then offered me a dried cricket to eat...so I'm not sure if I'll take his advice or not.
Oh and you gotta try that root beer! So so yummy. Way better than coke.

KOOKY BAKES @ SUNDAY UPMARKET, BRICK LANE, LONDON

WILD ROOIBOS TEA & CINNAMON SWIRL BUN @ BOOKING OFFICE RESTAURANT/BAR, ST PANCRAS RENAISSANCE HOTEL, LONDON
The Booking Office is a super cool place to check out even if you're not up for sitting and having a cuppa. Between 1935 and 2011, the building was known as St Pancras Chambers and was used as railway offices. Keeping with the theme, they've named their cafe the 'Booking Office' which I find to be pretty sweet.
Don't expect a huge selection of treats, the cafe menu is very simple and small...with a few different tea/coffee choices, as well as pastries and muffins. I wasn't too impressed with the cinnamon bun, it definitely looked way better than it tasted but it was sufficient for an early morning refuel. The tea was around 4 pounds a cup, so quite overpriced. I probably wouldn't go back again with the intention of having a food/drink! Bit of a disappointment, considering the outside looks so great.

ANATOLIAN MEAL DEAL (FOR TWO) @ THE REAL GREEK, SPITALFIELDS, LONDON
Grilled Halloumi cheese, new potatoes, chicken legs, hummus, tzatziki, flatbread, souvlaki...so much comes to mind when thinking about Greek food. Luckily for us Londoners, there's a little bit of Greece right in the heart of the city center. The Real Greek is a chain of restaurants that you can find in Covent Garden, Marylebone, Westfield Stratford, Westfield White City, Bankside and Spitalfields.
Don't let the fact that it's a chain get you down because the food is in fact incredibly yummy and really decently priced. Their meal deals often work out to around 25 pounds for two people and you get a shit load of food for that amount...not to mention some free glasses of vino.

HAND DIVIDED DORSET SCALLOPS, COCKLES, SMOKED ROE, SEA ASTER, CAULIFLOWER @ BERWICK LODGE, BRISTOL
In celebration of my 21st, my aunties 40th and uncles 50th, the family decided to throw a lunch for the Sri Lankan family massive at Berwick Lodge.
There was no doubt that the food was going to be incredible as the place itself was pretty nuts! I only had time to record the starter as after I was left a little in a little food coma.
The scallops were cooked to perfection and not at all fishy or rubbery. Matched with the salad and dressing, it was an unbeatable seafood starter.
I definitely recommend Berwick Lodge as a place to go eat on a special occasion!

PORK BELLY WITH PRUNES & APPLE SAUCE (plus red cabbage & mint new potatoes) @ ALBION, SHOREDITCH, LONDON
It's difficult to find places to eat in Shoreditch where you don't find 101 'hipsters'. But alas! I found the Albion which serves up some proper good ol English grub with barely a hipster in sight. The menu selection was pretty good, ranging from all day breakfasts to a variety of different soups and mains.
The pork belly was cooked to perfection! Although a little fatty in areas...but I suppose you have to expect that with this kinda meat. I was a little apprehensive about the prunes and apple sauce, but they both turned out to be the best part of the meal...alongside the red cabbage. I was on a hunt to find good red cabbage after eating what I thought was the best ever at Gold Brick House in Bristol. However, the red cabbage at Albion surpassed GBH by a mile. You have to try it for yourself though!
It's worth checking out the deli section of the restaurant which offers up some lovely baked goods and chocolate selection. Also, completely off topic...use their bathroom if you can because their handwash is amazeballs. It's from this band called Aesop, guaranteed your hands will come out smelling of christmas.

CYPRIOT LAMB, CAULIFLOWER SALAD, TZATZIKI & LEMON JUICE @ SALVATION JANE, SHOREDITCH, LONDON
Salvation Jane is run by two aussie dudes with a clear passion for healthy, good food. Their menu was short but sweet. Most of the menu was taken up by side dish/snacks which were incredible (check out the post below for more on that). Whilst my mum and aunt indulged in 500 side dishes, I decided to check out the Cypriot lamb.
Paired with tzatziki, the lamb melted in the mouth. The lemon juice added a bit of bitterness to it which I always rate highly! The only thing I felt was a little out of place was the cauliflower salad. Perhaps that's because i'm not really all that keen on the vegetable in the first place.
Cauliflower aside, Salvation Jane set the tone for a lovely, simplistic meal.

SOURDOUGH BREAD WITH TZATZIKI, OLIVE OIL AND HUMMUS & BATTERFRIED SQUID WITH MAYO AND LEMON JUICE @ SALVATION JANE, SHOREDITCH, LONDON
As I wrote in the previous post, the side dishes at SJ were by far their best thing on the menu! Firstly, the way they were presented was simplistic, authentic and made the food look bloody good. Out of both of the dishes my favourite was the squid, which reminded me of Sri Lankan cuttlefish dishes bar the chilli. Although small in size, they managed to fill the very large hole in my stomach ever so well.

POMEGRANATE MOJITO, CLASSIC MOJITO & GRAPE AND GINSENG MOJITO @ SALVATION JANE, SHOREDITCH, LONDON
Ok, I promise i'm not obsessed with SJ...yet...but seriously, I couldn't leave out the one thing that brought everything together...THE BOOZE. Although the pomegranate mojito wasn't all that wonderful, the classic & grape and ginseng proved to be a great choice. Definitely try the latter, the best one of the lot by a mile!

EGGS ROYALE @ THE BREAKFAST CLUB, LIVERPOOL ST, LONDON
Let me count the ways in which this meal was perfection...
Smoked Salmon
Poached Eggs
Hollandaise Sauce
Paprika
English Muffin
Spinach
So that's basically everything then! I heard about The Breakfast Club about a year ago and I was always itching to go and check it out. When I first got there (around 10am) the queue was heaving but I persevered, hoping that what I'd find inside would be totally worth the wait. And I was not disappointed. The atmosphere was nuts! It felt like I was being dragged through a time warp by little troll dolls. Going to the bathroom there was like taking a trip to the land of my little pony. My favourite part... (call me simple) was a SMEG fridge door that when opened leads into the basement. I only figured this out after I saw people disappear into the fridge and never come out.
As for the food, every ingredient meshed well together without it being too heavy or sickly. I'm a bit picky with smoked salmon, I hate when it's too stringy...but this one was divine (for lack of a better word). Since then I've been back to The Breakfast Club around three times with no sign of stopping anytime soon. If you're looking for good food and somewhere to tell you're friends about then this is most definitely it!

VANILLA PANNACOTTA WITH LEMON SHORTBREAD BISCUITS & BERRY COULIS @ THE ALBION, BRISTOL
If you ever find yourself in Clifton Village then you must must must go to my favorite pub/restaurant called The Albion. This is not your typical grimy pub grub! They serve up great British food in a super stylish way.
I'm a huge fan of their Sunday roast lunch... which unfortunately I ate so fast I had no time to take a photo of. The dessert was lovely though. The pannacotta had a good wobble to it and was creamy as ever, the shortbread wasn't too hard at all and went pretty well with the coulis.
The mains are definitely better than the desserts and worth the extra penny.
